What’s The Cost Worth To You?

October 28, 2019 by Charlene Elder

I’m sure you’re familiar with it…the ups and downs of eating right! I speak from experience because we’ve been eating healthy, no carbs, but after 10 weeks I just plain revolted. I made a batch of brownies (although we only ate maybe 4-5…the rest I sent with our son to his work place and the guys enjoyed them!). However I didn’t stop with brownies…urgh!!! I also got some chips – lightly salted potato chips AND corn chips. We enjoyed a few for lunch and later on.

Morale of our error is don’t do what we did! I paid the consequences for several nights with my stomach being upset. It dawned on me then (duh!) that my body was revolting for eating the carbs I knew I shouldn’t eat but wanted. I should have taken the advice from my son-in-law who shared his consequences of binging on carbs after not having them for so long…an upset stomach!

So often we think we’re being kept away from the things that taste good because we’re wanting to get healthier. We’re not being kept away from them really. We’re choosing to eat other things that satisfy and nourish us. A handful of chips make you want to eat another handful. Then come the cookies you haven’t had for ages, or the delicious chocolate brownies. Okay, ENOUGH of that! I know you understand this entire process because you’re not unlike me…you’ve been there.

SO, how do we handle these times? We walk right on by the ‘sweet shop’, the ‘salty shop’, the ‘tempting shop’, and determine we’re not going to indulge for just a second of tempting taste for hours of our body revolting and yelling at us. We’re going to stay on the road to healthy eating!

It’s worth the discipline and effort. Stay the course. You’ll be happier.

Let’s continue eating healthy y’all!

I Can’t Find A Diet I Like

March 21, 2019 by Jack Elder

Most dieters are looking for a diet that allows them to eat anything they want, and sit and watch TV, and lose 10 pounds a week. If you’ve been looking for such a diet then you’re right, you can’t find one you like.

The whole subject of finding the right diet encompasses information beyond the scope of this excuse. There are plenty of resources available to find just the right diet to fit your needs.

I will be the first to admit choosing a diet that works for you is hard. I read the book and think this diet is perfect, and for whatever reason not so perfect for me. You need to do your research. There are websites giving reviews of various diets, such as Everydiet.org. I’m not sure how they base their reviews whether scientific, medical, opinion, or all of the above.

There are other websites as well. I’ve been a member of SparkPeople for years, and they have diet plans. There are websites that will plan your diet based on your input. If you have been dieting very long, you can probably come up with your own list of “diet foods” and create your own eating plan.

Decide what you want to accomplish with your diet. Do you just want weight loss? Do you want to combine weight loss with healthy eating? Do you want to add fitness in the mix? Many factors go into choosing a plan. Most people like a weight loss plan someone has prepared, with meal plans, food lists, and grocery lists. There are plenty of those available. There is a diet just for you.

Fast Food Is Fast

March 14, 2019 by Jack Elder

Fast food is after all, fast. When you have a very limited amount of time, grabbing a quick bite at a fast food place is convenient. We have talked about fast food before, but we didn’t address the fact it is fast. Del Taco or Taco Bell can fix your 10 tacos before you can even fill up your cup of iced tea. All these fast food places feature drive-thru windows so you can get your food and be on your way. Our society is always in a hurry. Your 30-minute lunchtime is only 15 and you have to be at your next appointment.

At one place, I worked, I noticed the workers ate very fast and went out to play basketball during the rest of their lunch break. We live in the instant microwave society. We have instant pudding, instant oats, instant rice, instant soup, and of course, Ramen noodles. The family doesn’t sit down together because they are all off doing something.

The fact they call it “fast food,” indicates to me they sell the fact it is fast. People want fast, so sell them what they want. However, fast doesn’t change the reality of being high calorie and contributes to the obesity epidemic today. Therefore, slow down or as the signs say Stay calm and eat slowly. Your weight loss will thank you.

I Don’t Want to Starve

February 21, 2019 by Jack Elder

Excuse 21 – I Don’t Want To Starve Everyday

I don’t want to either. The hardest part of a weight loss diet is feeling hungry. We have all seen the cartoon where a skeleton is sitting on the park bench which the caption, “He was on a diet.” There is even a diet called the “No Hunger Diet.” Such diets usually means lots of protein and fiber helping keep the belly fuller. With three meals and three snacks, you’d think you would never get hungry. The only diet you will literally feel starved on is the starvation diet. Yep, unbelievably, there are even starvation diets. I wouldn’t recommend any of those. You will not starve on any normal weight loss diet. With 1200 to 1400 calories a day, your body will not go into starvation mode.

Most dieters will say they are starving when they get a few hunger pangs. The high schooler coming into the house after school will say he’s starving. You may even fast a few days and your body will not starve. I know some people who have gone on a 40-day fast. I don’t know if the fast was a water-only fast or liquid. Hey, you can liquefy a steak. Jesus went on a 40-day fast. Without any food, you will survive 30-40 days, maybe longer if you have a supply of fat reserved. Overall, starving isn’t good.

Will you feel hungry at times—yes? Do you feel like you could eat more—yes? In order to lose weight, you have to eat less than your body wants, thereby forcing the body to go to the reserves—stored fat. Eating less can sometimes cause you to feel a bit hungry. Your body gets use to you feeding it. When you cut back, it tends to rebel. However, hunger is a long ways from starving. Charlene always says when your tummy growls, your body is chomping up the fat. Dieting does not mean starving, by a long shot. No excuses.

The Recipes Are Too Complicated

February 13, 2019 by Jack Elder

Excuse 7 – The Recipes Are Too Complicated

To me, recipes become complicated by the kinds of hardware you need, the number and kinds of ingredients, and the preparation time. I’ve seen some recipes with over 30 ingredients. I’m always seeing some gadget on TV, which is supposed to make cooking easier or faster—a new pan or slicer. “Just set it and forget it.” Charlene says I can’t put it on the counter. I don’t know how many “laborsaving” devices are now in storage in the basement.

One point about recipes I find frustrating is they may call for just a little of one ingredient such as one tablespoon of tomato paste. You go to the grocery store and buy the smallest container of tomato paste you can get, use once and the rest just sits in the refrigerator until you have to throw it out. I hate to waste stuff, and I’ll probably never make the recipe again.

Some diets get on a certain ingredient kick. I’ve traveled all over two counties to try to find one ingredient. I want to say the diet asked for Macadamia oil, and when I found it, the ingredient was far too expensive for my budget.

When dieting you will probably use mostly one meat type such as chicken. Find recipes for putting variety in chicken. A quick online search and you will find hundreds of easy recipes. Chicken is a good candidate for the crock-pot.

Spices you can use over time if they are not too exotic. Usually, you have to use fresh spices shortly or they go bad. I like fewer ingredients. Of course, I very seldom cook, but Charlene will agree. Many recipes on the internet have five ingredients or less. Maybe if you love to cook, you’ll branch out into recipes that are more complicated.

An estimated 160 million Americans are either obese or overweight which means almost three-quarters of Americans are obese or overweight. It also appears the America’s obesity epidemic reaching crisis levels is more unstoppable than ever.

Overweight people know their health is in the balance but still come up with every conceivable excuse to do nothing about it. Here are just 187 of them. This book will chop those excuses down and root them out of your life. That is if you don’t come up with another excuse.
